Carradale Surgery is a Dispensing Practice operated by a single handed doctor. The main surgery is in Carradale, 15 miles north of Campbeltown. The practice extends from Ballochgair in the south, along the East Coast of the Kintyre Peninsula, to Skipness in the north, including Claonaig Estate and many other small communities. The doctor consults at Skipness Village Hall every Wednesday.
The practice list is about 600, but due to dispensing, demographics, geographical spread and a significant number of holiday visitors, the workload is much busier than this number suggests.
Being a small practice, we have the privilege to get to know our patients very well. We have time to spend with our patients, offering 15-minute appointments in daily surgeries – whether by phone, NearMe or face to face (f2f). An additional 15 minutes is currently allocated to f2f appointments to cover Covid requirements. Additional clinics are arranged as required. We carry out house visits when needed and we currently do all our influenza and baby immunisations as well as 6-8 week health checks and smears. We offer 3 yearly check-ups to all under 75 and annual check-ups to anyone over 75 yrs. The GP also offers minor surgery as an enhanced service. Due to our location and time from hospital care being at least a 30-minute drive, the GP is BASICS trained in pre- hospital care for trauma and medical emergencies.
Patients are referred to Glasgow, Oban or Campbeltown for outpatient appointments and hospital care. A comprehensive Ambulance Service is operated throughout the area with emergency ambulances having a Paramedic onboard. A helicopter augments the Air Ambulance Service.
The Practice has an active Patient Group with a very supportive community, reflected in the consistently high patient satisfaction statistics.
Quality Practice Award
In 2007 The Carradale Surgery was the first single handed practice in the country to be awarded the Quality Practice Award by the Royal College of General Practitioners.
The award is the highest RCGP quality award attainable, and recognises the commitment of the entire team in providing high quality care for patients within a learning and adaptive environment.
This award followed months of preparation by the whole Primary Health Care Team and reflected work done in achieving high standards of clinical care.
As there are only a few practices in the country who have achieved this high standard we are obviously extremely proud of this recognition. Needless to say this work is ongoing and we continually monitor clinical and non-clinical issues.
